The National Knife Collectors Association (NKCA) was founded in 1972 as a membership, not-for-profit corporation, chartered in the State of Tennessee. The NKCA is the oldest nationwide, all knife-only-organization, who has brought together knife fanciers, knife collectors, knife makers and knife dealers with something for everyone who appreciates cutlery.

The NKCA is focused on promoting the hobby of knife collecting, educating the general public and providing several programs that enhance the knife collecting experience.

The NKCA and the National Knife Museum provide accurate information, education and outreach to families, schools, youth groups and the general public, as well as to our members. Your dues help to ensure that future generations will enjoy and appreciate knives as much as you do.

Please note that we DO NOT offer any type of knife appraisals or knife research, as our staff is extremely limited. The best way to have any type of cutlery appraised or verified is to take it to a reputable knife enthusiast in your area and ask for several different opinions. We suggest you take your knife or knives to a KNIFE-ONLY Knife Show and ask the Show Coordinator for a dealer that might be of assistance in offering advice about your specific piece of cutlery. It is always best to get several opinions, as each dealer or knife enthusiast might offer valuable information about the history of your cutlery.

The NKCA sponsors and sanctions knife shows throughout the country each year.  View the SHOW SCHEDULE for a listing of upcoming NKCA shows. All members are offered tables at a discounted rate at all NKCA sponsored knife shows. Each table must be 90% cutlery or cutlery related items. NKCA members are admitted free of charge to all NKCA sponsored and sanctioned knife shows when you present your membership card at the admission area.

Since 1975, the NKCA has offered, to members only, an annual club knife. These knives are highly collectible and made in limited editions each year.

Several forms of membership are offered in the NKCA: Regular, Associate, Youth, International, Club, and Corporate. We hope to soon have several other types of memberships available for purchase.

The NKCA in the late 1970's envisioned the need for a cutlery museum. Several fund raisers were undertaken to secure sufficient funds to construct a facility to house the offices of the NKCA and National Knife Museum, Inc.

In 1981, the NKCA opened the National Knife Museum, located in historic Chattanooga, TN.  The Museum growth of donated cutlery and related memorabilia continued, requiring more volunteers and staff to assemble new exhibits. The higher cost associated with the operation of the Museum and paucity of funds, suggested other options should be considered. The location of the NKM was in highly commercialized area and was an attractive piece of real estate. The home of the NKCA and NKM was placed on the real estate market. In the spring of 2001, the Museum property was sold and the assets were placed in an environmental controlled storage facility.
