Katie’s Custom Knife Lanyards & Bracelets

At a recent NKCA Show in Tennessee I learned of an NKCA Youth Member with a very interesting and creative knife related business.  Her name is Katie Roberts, she is eight years old and lives in Northeast Tennessee.

U.S. Customs has introduced a proposal that would make assisted-opening and one-hand knives re-classified as illegal switchblades. This is a serious issue as Customs interprets and enforces the federal switchblade act. These knives are your Buck, Gerber, Benchmade, Kershaws and others that have a thumb stud or other device on the blade that helps you open it easily - and that you use every day.

The organization that I do work for AKTI (American Knife & Tool Institute) is fighting this. We have submitted a request to Customs and Border Patrol for extension from their June 21st deadline to respond. We have hired legal representation to formally respond. We have a plan to contact Congress.

But we need help - this affects millions of people. We need to 1) get Customs to extend the deadline; 2) rally our Congressmen; 3) get the word out; 4) present a responsible convincing response to Customs, and 4) win this!

Please read the information on our website www.akti.org - If Customs succeeds it will mean 1) knife businesses closing; 2) jobs lost; 3) citizens criminals by crossing state lines with these knives.

Please help! If you've never contacted your congressman before - now is the time. Please write U.S. Customs (so they receive by 6/21). Contacting your congressmen is very easy by email. See www.akti.org.

Please forward this email on to others - or send your own plea. Thanks, Jan Billeb
